Q: How do I know what size pond liner I will need for my backyard?
First of all, we want to say that bigger is always better. It’s better to have excess pond liner rather than be a few inches short. As a rule, you should aim to have at least 2 feet of overlay. Measure the maximum length of your pond, twice the depth and then additional overlay.
Q: What is EPDM?
EPDM, or Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer, is a synthetic rubber material that is flexible, puncture resistant and offers superior UV stability. What makes it good for a backyard pond? It’s easy to seam together and patch. Many of our available EPDM liners feature an extended warranty and are some of the best pond lining materials available.
Q: What is Polyethylene?
Polyethylene is another popular choice for pond liners. This plastic material offers good UV resistance, but is much stiffer than EPDM. It’s not the best choice for decorative features, plant shelves or other water displays. When appearance isn’t an issue, Polyethylene can be a good choice. It is more affordable, lighter and perfect for large ponds.
Q: What is Flexible PVC?
Flexible PVC is created using PVC resin and plasticizers to make a flexible material. Many PVC liners are used in showers and can be found in home improvement stores. What makes them a bad choice for pond liners is that they often contain trace amounts of arsenic or other toxins that are lethal to pond fish. If you plan to use this for your pond, choose a Fish Grade PVC.
