Backyard water and flower gardens often go hand in hand. If you are someone who enjoys creating a beautiful outdoor space, tending these gardens is probably something you look forward to. As the season comes to an end, you are probably pretty bummed that these spaces will be pared down for the winter months. But just because summer is drawing to a close doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of opportunity to enjoy some beautiful flowers and plants until the frost arrives. In addition to the changing leaves, there are flowers that are hardy enough to endure through the fall. Depending on where you live, certain varieties really thrive during this time of year. Plant these blooms around your home and backyard pond and enjoy them for as long as the weather will allow.
- Swamp Lily: Enjoy pink and white blooms around your water garden from spring all the way into fall.
- Calendula: If you live somewhere with a mild winter, these blooms will last you from late fall all the way into spring. They come in variations from bright to pale shades of orange and yellow and require full sun.
- Cardinal Flower: Plant these around the edge of your pond and enjoy the bright red blooms in the late summer and into fall.
- Ornamental Kale: Bet you didn’t really think of kale as an attractive flower for your garden. But this breed of kale has purple, pink and white leaves that can handle cold weather, with the color getting even deeper in the cold.
- Goldenrod: Goldenrod can survive the heat of summer and will still be standing when fall arrives.
- Winter Jasmine: Winter jasmine provides happy yellow flowers that will pop up against the dreary grays of winter.
- Russian Sage: Russian sage is a sturdy plant with cheerful blue flowers. Added bonus – it smells amazing.
- Sedum: Sedum waits until summer is over and then blooms, giving you a pleasant end-of-season treat.
- Leadplant: The leadplant shows off its beauty twice in the fall, with bright blue flowers and then leaves that change from green to red.
- Sweet Autumn Clematis: It even has autumn in the name. This vine sprouts white flowers at the end of the season.
